Beginning in 4th grade, students may participate in a beginning band or orchestra class to learn and develop fundamental music skills and learn to play as part of an ensemble.
In 4th and 5th grade, students may compete on a four-person team in a school-level Geography Bowl. The winning teams go on to complete at a district-level bowl with both Thomas Edison schools.
The Library Team Advisory Group is comprised of middle school students who meet weekly to design library challenges, book trailers, and other library events to promote reading.
Middle school and upper elementary students may serve on the Student Council. Student Council members meet weekly to plan assemblies, service opportunities, and other school-wide events. They also learn leadership and team-working skills.
History and research are important elements of a Thomas Edison education. By 8th grade, our students have learned the critical skills needed to successfully compete in a school-level History Fair. Top projects advance to regionals and the Utah State History Day competition. Each year, Thomas Edison students qualify to go to Washington D.C. to compete at the national level.
At Edison North, 4th - 8th grade students may participate on a robotics team as part of the FIRST Lego League Challenge. Team members work together to research, design, code, and problem-solve to compete in a robot game. They also identify real-world problems and develop creative and innovative solutions.
Each year, middle school students participate in a school science fair. Top projects may advance to a regional fair to participate in other science and engineering challenges.
Thomas Edison partners with the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. Students participate in a classroom-level spelling bee which feeds into a school bee using rules and words from Scripps. The top speller at each Thomas Edison school takes an online test. Qualifying spellers advance to an online Scripps Regional Bee. The regional winner gets to compete at the national level.
Students in 4th-8th grade may participate on a four-member team in the annual Battle of the Books. Team members work together to answer questions from 20 pre-selected books. The three top-scoring teams from each school then compete at the district-level for the honor of earning the traveling trophy to be displayed at their school for the upcoming year.
At Edison South, 7th and 8th grade students may participate in the annual Biggest Writer Challenge. Students are challenged to write a 10,000 word story in one month, all outside of class time. Each year, the challenge averages over 100 participants who write over 1.5 million total words.
Middle school students may join the Yearbook Staff. Members of the Yearbook Staff take pictures of school events and meet weekly to work together to create interesting layouts and designs to capture and preserve meaningful memories of each school year.
